Tired of not being able to find something you bookmarked weeks ago? Weary of having someone else store all of your precious bookmarks on their servers? Concerned that you might not be able to access them when you really need to? Do you want more control over who gets to see what you've been bookmarking? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, then try out Bookmark Log!

Bookmark Log is a system designed from scratch to give you the most control over your bookmarks without having to rely on 3rd party servers or the antiquated bookmarks.html file that will not scale (my original bookmarks.html went back to 1997 and was over 5MB) (Update 06/14/08: Ok, Firefox 3 now implements SQLLite for the bookmark backend, but I still prefer being able to access my bookmarks from any machine). And best of all, each bookmark is searchable not just by title, but by meta description/keyword tags, your selected 'snippet' of text from the webpage, an optional description, and new or existing tags. Never again will you lose that precious bookmark!

Some key features in development include:

  • "Web 2.0"/AJAX behavior on tag edits and other update actions
  • "Type ahead" auto-complete behavior when tagging a bookmark in order to provide automated tag lookups
  • The ability to make certain bookmarks public for others to view
  • RSS feeds on your and other users' bookmarks based on a tag
  • Regularly scheduled HTTP 404 error scans of existing bookmarks so you can know which sites are no longer reachable
  • Automated 'number of times visited' tracking for each bookmark
  • Star based ranking system for each bookmark, so you can filter out only the best bookmarks at a later date
  • The ability to import your existing Firefox bookmarks.html file into your account
  • Advanced tag management features which include the ability to rename/remove individual tags as well as create parent/child relationships to better manage related tags

Usage

1. In order to use Bookmark Log, after creating an account, simply click and drag the bookmarklet below to your toolbar in Firefox. View example.

2. Next, when visiting a webpage, optionally highlight some text and then click the bookmarklet in your toolbar to bring up the bookmarklet form (you will be prompted to login within the bookmarklet form if necessary). Here you can add such information as a description, referrer URL, whether or not the bookmark should be visible by other registered users, and most importantly of all, your tags. Then simply click submit on the bookmarklet window to save the current bookmark into your Bookmark Log account. View example.

Depending on your browser settings, the bookmarklet will either open in a new tab or into a new window. I recommend allowing it to open into a new window.

3. Simply login to view your bookmarks in the order in which they were saved.

Future

When it comes time to launch version 1.0 of the application, the source will be made available so that you can host it on your own servers. It has been implemented using Apache, PHP, and MySQL.

IE friendly bookmarklet coming soon...
